The Season of Apricots

Every July, a quiet transformation sweeps across Shigar Valley. The bright green leaves of our dense orchards are joined by a sea of warm, orange apricots. The air smells sweet and heavy with fruit.
The apricot is the true symbol of Baltistan. Introduced centuries ago, this hardy fruit has sustained our mountain communities through long, cold winters. During the harvest, the entire village of Alchori moves in a coordinated, slow-paced dance. Families gather the fruit, gently split them, and place them on flat wicker mats or directly onto the flat, sun-warmed mud roofs of their homes to dry.
During this golden season, guests at Serenge Retreat can participate in the harvest, taste fresh apricots straight from the tree, and learn how local cold-pressed apricot oil is made—a precious oil we use in our traditional cuisine and wellness therapies.
It is a season of abundance, hard work, and deep community connection—a beautiful reminder of the earth's natural cycles.
