When the first heavy snows fall in December, the Karakoram peaks turn into quiet giants of ice and white. Shigar Valley enters a season of deep hibernation.

Snow changes the acoustics of the world. The soft flakes act as a natural sound absorber, dampening even the quietest sounds and muffling all unnecessary noise. The rushing Shigar River slows to a quiet, crystal-clear stream running between snowy stones.

In winter, life moves indoors. We gather around our central wood stoves, drinking cups of hot spiced tea, reading books, and sharing stories. It is a time for deep introspection, rest, and restoring our energy for the coming spring.
