Why We Built a Riverside Eco Retreat in Gilgit-Baltistan

As tourism grows in Gilgit-Baltistan, we face a crucial choice: do we build standard concrete hotels that disrupt the natural landscape, or do we create conscious spaces that preserve and celebrate the local environment? For us, the answer was clear.

We built Serenge Retreat with a firm commitment to low-impact, sustainable hospitality. Our cabins and lodge spaces were constructed using local materials—natural river stones, locally sourced poplar wood, and sun-dried mud bricks. This traditional building method provides excellent insulation, keeping rooms warm during cool mountain nights and cool during sunny summer days, all without requiring heavy heating or cooling systems.

But our eco-commitment goes beyond building materials. We operate a farm-to-table kitchen, sourcing fresh, organic ingredients directly from our own garden and neighboring Alchori farms. This ensures our guests eat nutritious, authentic local meals while directly supporting the local agricultural economy.

We also prioritize water conservation, waste reduction, and local community employment. By training and employing young men and women from Alchori Village, we ensure the economic benefits of tourism flow directly into the community that hosts us.
